Abstract.  There is increased interest in the use of high tunnels for extending the production season for many horticultural crops.  In the central Midwest, the climate often limits early field production of high-value, warm season vegetables such as tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum).  However, high tunnels modify the unpredictable environment by increasing the average daily temperature and shielding the plants from wind, rain and other weather stresses.  The University of Missouri, in cooperation with Kansas State University and the University of Nebraska is conducting comprehensive research with high tunnels for several horticultural crops.  The University of Missouri has constructed eight high tunnels for research with warm season cropping systems.
